A trip to Belgium in the spirit of AI and cultural biases

It was a wonderful experience to visit PXL University of Applied Sciences as part of the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). Students and lecturers from Finland, Portugal, Albania, Germany and, of course, Belgium came together to explore AI and cultural biases.

Over five days packed with team-building, lectures, exercises and project work, the students were able to reflect on how AI supports information research on specific topics. Using the ‘Pacman’ method, they sought to broaden their perspective on cultural issues and not just focus on the obvious aspects. Using the ‘Strawman / Steelman’ method, they examined other opinions with the aid of AI, presenting sound arguments for each opinion and counter-opinion. A ‘frameworking’ method helped them to better understand the reasons behind these arguments.

In their presentations at the end of the week, the students reflected on how helpful AI had been to them during their research and where the limitations lay – both in terms of the tools and the tasks set.

Leisure activities and fun were also part of the BIP experience. The mixed group of students from all five countries bonded over a spot of bowling, a visit to the Japanese Garden, and a lovely dinner.

The student mobility was funded by the Erasmus programme and accompanied by Michaela Polz. Many thanks once again to the organisers for providing the students with the space to explore, collaborate and engage in critical thinking on a highly relevant topic!
