Applied Acoustics - Laboratory for Sound Measurement

The development of empirically derived planning values for calculating airborne and impact sound transmission in timber construction is being driven forward. This will reduce existing gaps in the prediction method. Participation in standards committees for DIN 4109 supports the further development of calculation methods and the expansion of component catalogues in timber and lightweight construction.

Building information modelling (BIM) and AI methods make it possible to optimise the acoustics of buildings early in the design phase. We are researching

• the integration of calculation models into digital design methods,
• the management of measurement and design data in the digital design process,
• and the possible applications of AI for sound insulation prediction.

The focus is therefore on the use of open data standards.

Building services equipment can cause structure-borne noise in the building and airborne noise radiation, resulting in audible noise in adjacent rooms.

Modern measurement technology such as 3D scanning laser Doppler vibrometers or multi-channel vibration measurement technology (image) enables high-resolution detection of vibrations and low-frequency sound transmission. Vibroacoustic measurements of vibration behaviour and excitability enable the validation and further development of numerical methods.

Different uses of rooms require adapted room acoustic features, particularly in terms of sound absorption and sound control. The task of room acoustics is to specifically influence the auditory impression by utilising structural design options and room interiors.
