The increasing penetration of photovoltaic power (PV) into the electricity grid strongly amplifies the need for accurate short-term solar forecasts. Rapid cloud-induced fluctuations on time scales of minutes poses a major challenge for grid stability and operational energy management. All-Sky Imagers (ASI) have become an essential tool for solar forecasting, as they provide high-resolution, real-time observations of cloud cover and cloud motion that are not sufficiently captured by satellite based predictions alone. By enabling precise nowcasting of solar irradiance and PV power, ASI-based methods represent the current state of the art of very short-term forecasting.
As part of the HELIOS-AI research project, funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt), the project consortium together with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oldenburg is organizing a workshop dedicated to All-Sky Imagers, solar forecasting, their practical applications, and current research developments. The program will include a series on engaging presentations, complemented by extensive opportunities for discussion and networking, enabling participants to exchange ideas and strengthen connections with the community.
This workshop will be followed by the IEA PVPS TASK 16 meeting on Solar Resource for High Penetration and Large Scale Applications (October 7 - 9, 2026).
Registration and participation for the 2nd International All-Sky Imager Workshop are free of charge. During registration, participants are invited to indicate whether they would like to actively contribute to the workshop, for example by proposing a presentation topic or sharing their own work. These contributions will be considered in the development of the final program, which is currently being prepared and will be published closer to the workshop.
Following the positive feedback from the 1. International All-Sky Imager Workshop in Rosenheim (Germany) in 2025, we are looking forward to an exciting second workshop with you.
Free registration is now open.
