Programmable Logic Controllers and Electronic Control Units

Wherever products are manufactured in an automated process, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and other electronic control devices are an essential part of production plants. Whether you think of a smartphone or a bag of chips, production would be impossible without PLCs. Millions of electronic control units (ECUs) are used in many devices and machines, such as cars, robots and household appliances. The key elements of all control devices are microcontrollers. Developing the necessary software is supported by user-friendly programming methods.

PLC - key component of automation

Programming of production systems is studied by means of practice-oriented laboratory experiments. In the lab course, PLC software for a mock-up production plant is developed in several steps. The modern development environment TIA Portal and the industry standard Simatic S7 are used for this purpose.

Development of electronic control devices

Hardware and software development are inherently linked in electronic control devices. As in industrial practice, education starts with a specification for an ECU. The realization in hardware and software is based on a microcontroller.

Mathematical models and simulations are indispensable for systematic product development. In the development of complex ECUs, automated code generation based on models is well established in industry. This model-based development methodology is taught in the courses.
