Process Automation Technology

The students have acquired knowledge of object-oriented programming. They have also learned the basics of graphical programs, visualization and GUI. The students also learned programming in a high-level programming language (Visual C++). The students are able to create simple programs with a graphical interface. They know how to handle with IT security issues.

Students get to know the basics of the structure and classification of materials, the most important properties of materials (mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical, chemical) and their interaction in multi-component systems. They learn how to classify and characterise materials based on their physical and chemical properties and to recognise correlations. The transfer of the theoretical learning objectives takes place in an application-oriented manner through practical units on site in companies as well as internal and external internship units.

The students know the basic concepts and essential laws from electrical engineering. Kirchhoff’s laws are known. Electric and magnetic fields are known. The students know the mathematical description of direct and alternating current theory. The description of systems with alternating current theory using complex numbers to describe the shift in voltage and current, as well as using vector images, is well known. Simple application examples are known. At the end of the module, the students know the basics of electrical engineering.

Students will be introduced to the basics and concepts of programming (C++), and methods and tools of software engineering, as well as visualisation and GUI, and learn how to apply them in practice.

Students will be introduced to the basics and project planning of automation systems, the components in electrical construction (fuses, motor protection switch-es, contactors), and the design of the control and main circuit and contactor circuits. We will talk about PLC programming and programming languages, the connection of sensors and actuators to the automation system, and the commissioning of automation systems and troubleshooting.

The aim of the module is to give students an overview of electronic components (diodes, transistors, LEDs, photoresistors, hot and cold conductors etc). They understand the frequency-dependent behaviour of RLC circuits and can design them according to the desired cut-off frequency. Moreover, students will build electronic circuits on a plug-in board using circuit diagrams.

Students will be given an introduction to the general principles of chemical engineering, as well as its basic operations, the fundamentals of reaction technology (stoichiometry of reactions, reaction networks, quantities for the quantitative description of reactions, systematics of reactions and reactors), and an overview of material, energy and momentum balances in systems with chemical reactions and kinetic approaches.

The aim of the module is to teach the essential basic operations of thermal process engineering, the underlying physical-chemical relationships and the corresponding technical apparatus. Students will be able to carry out process engineering experiments on experimental plants of different scales, to evaluate the data and results obtained and to interpret them with reference to common models.

The students learn the basics of mechanical process engineering, the characterisation of disperse systems, solid-liquid-separation such as centrifuges, filters, sedimentation and hydrocyclones. They conduct practical experiments on selected contents of the lecture with particle size analysis (agglomeration in the fluidised bed, cutting via grinding, fluidisation).

Students learn how to classify the concepts of Big Data, especially Data Mining, and how to use these in simple cases and transfer them to plants and production-related networks. They will learn about approaches of systems data engineering for the evaluation of accruing data in order to automatically evaluate the influence of fluctuating operating parameters on the process.

The aim of the module is to have students understand and design control loops, as well as understand the special features of P, PI and PID controllers, know rules of thumb for the design and the background for determining the control parameters.

The students learn about the structure and functionality of modern process control systems for controlling chemical-technical plants, including hardware, software and network technologies. Students will be able to understand the structure of process control systems and the function and purpose of the individual components and apply this knowledge in operational practice.

Students get to know the basics of fluid mechanics and rheology. They learn how to calculate flow in general as well as in pipelines and fittings. They are taught the basics of turbomachinery, compressors and displacement pumps and the basics of plant design and planning.

The students learn methodological competence and the basics of scientific work with regard to the practical semester and later professional activity.

Students do an internship in a company on engineering tasks.

Students will be introduced to the basics of project management and the planning of process engineering plants. They learn about the procedure in the basic and detailed planning of plants, how to plan the process control system of a plant, how to design the individual plant components with regard to measurement, control and regulation technology, and how to describe them in the P&I diagram and control concept and to integrate them into the overall process control system.

The aim of the module is to introduce students to data transmission on the internet and data transfer on the Internet of Things, as well as the basics of IT security, such as firewalls, encryption, or anti-virus programmes.

Students familiarise themselves with electrical measurement technology and the special features of direct current, alternating current and three-phase current measurement. They will be able to distinguish the different measurement methods of impedance and power measurement (e.g. three- and four-wire measurement, three-voltage measurement method, resistance measurement bridges).

Students learn how to select and use electrical and fluidic actuators. They learn about the control options of electric motors, e.g. three-phase asynchronous machines, servo machines, stepper motors, as well as fluid-technical systems and how to select e.g. cylinders, valves in a pneumatic system and read the corresponding circuit diagrams. Depending on the application, they can select suitable drives and actuators and their control systems and integrate them into a higher-level control system.

The module introduces elementary business administration knowledge that engineers need in a practical way, and gives students an introduction to production logistics.

PT 32.1 FWPM Career Fair - 'IKORO Burghausen'

The entire IKORO fair is planned and elaborated in the project team, including the conceptual design, budgeting & controlling, marketing, company support, specialist lectures, IT & infrastructure, and logistics. Tasks and responsibilities are coordinated in the project team in different groups.

PT 32.2 Flow simulation in process engineering

The students get to know the basics of flow simulation (CFD) in theory starting from the mathematical approaches, to setting up a grid and numerical solution. They learn how to simulate challenges in process engineering, e.g.how to simulate flow processes and heat transport phenomena. They learn the differences to other simulation approaches such as the finite element method and the use of the discrete element method for the simulation of bulk materials. In practicals the application to challenges from process engineering is done in flow simulation programs.

PT 32.3 Special separation processes and hybrid processes

Modern concepts for solving difficult separation tasks (narrow-boiling & azeotropic mixtures, multicomponent systems, low concentrations, etc.) are taught using selected examples. In exercises and the associated practical course, the lecture content is deepened using selected examples of hybrid separation processes.

PT 32.4 Additives in polymers

The students get to know different possible additive groups, their areas of application and effects in the polymer in theory. The knowledge is deepened in practice with the help of some examples.

PT 32.5 Visualisation with virtual and augmented reality

In the module, the students learn the basics of 3D computer graphics such as the description of bodies, movement in space, collision detection, colour theory, as well as the basics of current hardware in the area of virtual and augmented reality such as current data helmets, but also AR solutions on tablets and smartphones. Students get to know terms such as predictive maintenance and have recognised the extended possibilities of an interface in augmented reality. They use the content they have learned to work on a glass laboratory in augmented reality in the associated practical course. They thus gain experience in handling, realising, but also using advanced visualisation techniques.

The aim of the module is to introduce students to Industry 4.0 and to contextualise the fourth industrial revolution.

Students learn methods of flow sheet simulation for control and for process engineering plants, and how to simulate the process engineering aspects of a plant with software such as Aspen.

The aim of the module is to familiarise students with the dangers of chemical and process engineering plants. They learn how to classify the hazards and risks on the basis of energy content and material flows, among other things.

The Bachelor's thesis is an independent, application-oriented, scientific final thesis on a new task or an innovative topic. In the Bachelor's thesis, students demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills acquired in the course of study in a scientific context to complex tasks in business practice and to prepare the findings in a written thesis that meets scientific criteria. An examination of existing approaches from the specialist literature is expected, a constructive application and further development of such approaches or new problem solutions.
